Art & Design?

Art & Design are both a means of creative communication. From Storytelling or Branding, Message or Function, to Decorative or Appeal, both seek to evoke a response from the audience. Let it be an emotion, call to action, a subjective or objective option, it creates this back and worth dialogue between creator and audience.

Why Art?

Art has existed since the dawn of time - from cave drawings to gallkAery masterpieces, as collective items or used for home decors. Now in the digital age it is made widely viewable and quickly accessible than ever before. Yet the fundamentals of why Art exists hasn’t really changed much, well in my opinion, that is. Here are some of the key aspects of Art and what it means for me.

Storytelling

My two largest projects are my graduate portfolios and they are based on Storytelling. From the stills of my comic to the moving image of my animation, pictures tell what words can’t, as cliché as the old saying goes - 'A picture tells a thousand words'. Stories can be about numerous themes, using different genres, of different styles, but by using visuals, ideas are represented with impact and more vivid experiences created - Art moves and attracts the audience. In the case of my works, Storytelling is used to convey – culture, life, emotions, time, seasons, the mythological, the natural and many more.

Message

Art often puts forward a message to the audience - environmental awareness, personal identity, and peace, just to name a few. Messages can be direct or up to interpretation but different art styles, different mediums, symbolisms and techniques are carefully chosen and applied for the desired outcome.

Decorative

Last but not least Art exists for decorative purposes. Art can be a frame piece or sculptural element, used for an interior décor or as a crafted gift. Art exerts visual attractiveness creating direct awareness, interest or specific emotions.

Why Design?

Design works in similar ways to Art. Art attracts its viewing audiences while Design are directed at the market, business clients and consumers. Why Design exists is also similar. The three key points are Branding, Function and Appeal. Branding is like Storytelling, Function is like Message, while Appeal is like Decorate.

Branding

Like Storytelling, Branding is design's way of representing the story of a company or personnel. Unifying elements throughout their products or media gives a certain visual appearance that might represent identity and create ownership. Origins, developments or stories might be conveyed through symbolisms, while colours used to represent the business emotions or character type. Typography might be used to also represent a feeling or give a certain tone to the design.

Function

The Function of the Design might also be used to convey Messages like Art. It can act as a way to present details faster and effectively, utilising composition to direct the eye to certain information (highlighting). Or it might just be the simple construction of the product. The ultimate function of Design is to help the marketing of a business, personnel and its products.

Appeal

Design is to drive the initial attraction towards clients or buyers. Like Art it Decorates the product. Attraction occurs in the first few seconds and Design differentiates between creating leavers or stayers. Colour, Typography and Composition all help to draw in certain types of people or create specific aesthetics that accentuates the product.
